For some reason, when everything seems to be going smoothly, I run into this problem where, when everything is finishing up, a box pops up saying 'WRE54G cannot associate with this AP in repeater mode' if that is the problem, how would i go about disabling it? Given the depth of this thread and the clearly informed folks trying to solve very similar issues, I've come to the conclusion that the WRE54G is poorly engineered. Following the instructions of the folks at Linksys tech support, I disabled WEP encryption on my wireless router (a WRT54GS). Next, I reset the WRE54G expander by holding down the reset button for 5 seconds (you'll need a paperclip or similar object), then unplugging, waiting 30 seconds, and then plugging the expander back in. For some reason, when everything seems to be going smoothly, I run into this problem where, when everything is finishing up, a box pops up saying \u0027WRE54G cannot associate with this AP in repeater mode\u0027 if that is the problem, how would i go about disabling it? Meaning, if the AP you are on gets turned off, but another is available, reset the WRE then press the auto config button again.

with the WRE in my Appt but closer to hers she gets three.

Rather than waste more of my time trying to get it to work consistently and securely, I wonder if any of you have any experience with other RE devices? Next use the configuration CD to configure the expander.

When you get the "WRE54G can not associate with this AP in repeater mode" message, unplug the expander (do NOT reset), wait another 30 seconds and plug it back in.

On your PC, refresh your wireless network list and connect to the expander this time (btw, it will still have it's original SSID).

Now you should be able to connect to it via your browser by typing in the IP address of the expander.

Assuming that you accepted the default, this should be 192.168.1.240Now if all was well you should be ocnnected to the expander. You might also want to double check and make sure that you can get to your router at 192.168.1.1Next step is to enable WEP on the expander. You're going to use the same passphrase to generate the keys that you originally used on your router (assuming that you had WEP set up on that before you started. If not, choose a passphrase now and write it down). YOu'll get a message about setting up the WEB key and will loose connection to the expander. Now go back to your wireless network list and reconnect to your router.Enable WEP on the router using the same passphrase to generate the keys that you used above.BEFORE you save the settings, copy the key that gets generated for Key 1 to a local file on your PC (using copy and paste or just write it down). Once you save your settings on the router, you will loose your connection.
